Doreen Virtue, PhD is a metaphysician and clairvoyant who works with the angelic, elemental and ascended master realms. She is the author of many bestselling books and has appeared on numerous television programmes.

MICHAEL: How would you define your faith?

DOREEN: I don't know that I can define it, since it's more feeling than intellectually based. I could compare it to a blend of Hinduism, Christian Science, and Course in Miracles.

MICHAEL: How do you begin and end your day?

DOREEN: My husband and I meditate and pray each morning together. At night, I have a ritual of surrounding the entire earth with white protective light.

MICHAEL: What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to anyone just starting out on their spiritual journey?

DOREEN: Have patience with yourself and the process. Wherever you are at, spiritually, is perfect for you and is in Divine order.

MICHAEL: How did you first start your spiritual journey?

DOREEN: I was raised by two metaphysician parents, my mother being a professional Christian Science practitioner. I am a fourth-generation metaphysician. My parents taught me affirmation, spiritual healing, and visualization methods, as I was learning my colours and numbers as a child. I had many mystical experiences growing up and witnessed lots of miracles. So I don't know any different. The only change is that, today, I can speak about such occurrences openly. As a child, I was teased for having "weird" beliefs and a "weird" family.

MICHAEL: There seems to be a lot of unrest going on right now in the world. What is your take on current world events?

DOREEN: There's also a lot of beauty in the world right now. One of my passions is studying history, particularly the history of spirituality and religion. Compared to past cultures, we're more peaceful, evolved, and forgiving than ever. There are so many expressions of love to see every day. I choose to focus on that love and beauty, because I sincerely believe whatever you focus upon is what grows. I only want love and beauty to grow.

MICHAEL: On a positive note, there seems to be an emerging interest in spirituality all over the planet right now, more than ever. Can you talk about this? Is this what some people are calling the New Age? 

DOREEN: We're becoming more independent thinkers, each deciding for our own selves what spirituality means. More of us are now "gourmets" with religion and spirituality, taking a little from this and a little from that. Please hold the guilt, and I'll take two helpings of love and forgiveness please. So instead of following formal religious rules and conventions, more of us are having personalized relationships with the Divine. I'm finding that this has increased the joy and happiness for many people. I wouldn't want to label this phenomena New Age, as I believe it's a cycle that humans have experienced before in the earth's history.

MICHAEL: It was your pioneering work that got me interested in more "out there" spiritual topics such as working with the angels, clairvoyance etc. Like you, I am very scientific and grounded. So what made you believe?

DOREEN: It's ironic that I was raised with complete faith in miracles, but then went through a period of rebellion in my early adulthood where I questioned my spiritual upbringing. Most people that I know who were raised in traditional religions rebelled by getting into alternative spirituality areas. I rebelled by becoming left-brained and scientific!
 My turn-around came on July 15, 1995 when my life was saved by a disembodied male voice (Archangel Michael) who instructed me during an armed car-jacking. That situation was completely unexplainable by science. Being someone who loves doing research, I began interviewing other people who'd had brushes with death and who were saved by the divine. Each person's story helped me to understand that angel experiences were quite normal. It's just that everyone was afraid to openly admit having them, for fear of seeming crazy. So I offered to begin discussing the topic openly in public with my workshops. That's still what I do to this day.

MICHAEL: Have you got a favourite book or author?

DOREEN: Several! My favourite is the Urtext version of A Course in Miracles (the original unedited version of the book). So my favourite author is Jesus, the author of the Course, followed by Emmet Fox, Florence Scovil Shinn, Dolores Cannon, Norman Vincent Peale, and anyone who writes from a very positive viewpoint.

MICHAEL: In your wonderful book, Goddesses and Angels, and your card deck Saints and Angels, you talk about various saints of the Catholic tradition. What inspired you to write about them?

DOREEN: I've always thought that Catholicism and every other religion, have very positive gifts to offer us. That's my "gourmet" style of spirituality. I've always loved and admired the saints and emphasis upon archangels and miracles that the Catholic church offers. My first encounters with saints occurred as I was doing angel readings and meditations in the early 1990's. Saint Therese (the Little Flower) was the first saint I encountered. I heard her name and felt her presence during a meditation. I had no idea who she was, not being Catholic. So I telephoned a very friendly priest who was very open-minded and helped me to understand why she would come to me. Then during my angel readings, I'd encounter other saints. During my European travels, I began visiting Catholic churches and communing with other saints. My most profound experience was at Lourdes, which I write about in my book, Goddesses & Angels.

MICHAEL: What are the benefits of prayer and meditation? Have you got any suggestions as to how to meditate?

DOREEN: I think they're both essential to having peace-of-mind and clarity of thought. There's no one right way to pray or meditate. What's important is that we do so. Because we have free will, the Divine can't help us without our permission (with the exception of a life-endangering situation before it's our time to go). So we must ask for help (pray) in order to receive it. I pray every day for what I desire, and all throughout the day, I ask for help. The angels have taught me that it's not enough to just say, "Help me with everything today." They need our specific permission in every situation.
 As far as meditation, it's enough to simply close your eyes and deeply breathe for a few moments. There's no need to inflict rules and regulations on praying and meditating.

MICHAEL: What form of exercise do you do and recommend?

DOREEN: We're each guided individually as to the care of our physical bodies. I personally was guided many years ago to eat only organic, vegan food and to exercise daily. That really works for me, but everyone's physical makeup is different. What's important is to follow the guidance that you're receiving. If you have strong feelings to exercise more or differently, or to change your diet, you'll really be happy once you follow that guidance! The angels aren't trying to control us with this guidance. They're just answering our prayers for better health, peace, abundance, increased psychic abilities, etc. The faster that we follow the guidance, the faster our prayers are answered.

MICHAEL: Do you ever feel "down"? If so, what tools do you use to get yourself "back-on-track" as quickly as possible?

DOREEN: I have moments when I don't feel as happy as I'd like to. That's when I call upon Archangel Jophiel, who helps us to beautify our thoughts and thereby uplift our moods. I also have written discussions with angels if I ever feel upset. This is the easiest way for me to really understand the truth and heart of the matters. Once I understand what's going on within myself, my energies and moods lift upward again.

MICHAEL: Finally, have you got a message from the angels for the readers of this interview?

DOREEN: Have hope in a better today and tomorrow. Remember that at sunset when the world seems to be getting colder and darker, that's when the sun's beams are the most visible and colourful. We are with you right now as you read these words. As you breathe, feel our loving presence next to you. We're always ready to help you in any way, just by your asking. You are deeply loved and very appreciated. We see your beauty, talent, and grace. You bring many blessings to this planet just by virtue of being alive. We need you, Earth Angel!

 THE MIRACLES OF ARCHANGEL MICHAEL: A further conversation with Doreen Virtue (New interview added November 2008)

MICHAEL: Firstly I want to say I loved your new book, The Miracles of Archangel Michael. It was so inspiring and uplifting. After reading it I had a lot of synchronicities happen to do with Michael. My question is: What inspired you to write this book at this time?

DOREEN: Thank you for your comments about the book. One of my prayers in writing this book is that people while they’re reading it will have what you experienced and will get to know this amazing being on a personal level and really show that he’s across the board no matter what spiritual path or even non-spiritual path someone’s on he’s there to help all of us. I think that some people think he belongs to certain religions or they think they don’t deserve his help or they just don’t know about angels and so there’s a lot of folks who aren’t reaping the benefit of working side-by-side with Michael and so the reason I wrote it is right now I’m concerned about the amount of fear that’s being talked about in the media and just the general people about the economy and world situations and to me the complete solution is working with Michael.

MICHAEL: Is there anything we can’t ask Archangel Michael to do because it seems like he’s there for everything.

DOREEN: I believe that Michael watches over every aspect of Earth life. I think he’s been here since the beginning and I think he’s the angel of Earth and so he’s witnessed the human evolution- or de-evolution depending on your perspective- and so he knows what we’re about, almost like a parent knows their child. He really is the Creator’s right-hand man. So in answer to your question is there anything he can’t do; there are better angels for some of the softer, more nurturing requests we may have- because he can be heavy-handed. He’s that fiery real male energy- and so for instance if you wanted to have a good night’s sleep while being cleared, I would rather work with Archangel Raphael, who’s more androgynous and is a real softer, gentler energy for working with night time healings. And Archangel Chamuel for finding anything you’re looking for- so they all have specialties, but Michael crosses over into so many areas that he really would be a kind of one-purpose type of; I mean if you are going to call anyone I would call him.

One of the things I wrote about in this book that I really got out of writing it was that I really admired the people in the stories in the book who had the reflex and the presence of mind to call on Michael when they were in a crisis. You know, they were in the middle of almost being killed in a car accident and they call out ‘Michael’. I would hope that God forbid if I was in that situation I would have the presence of mind to call on Michael

MICHAEL: I enjoyed the fact that you put in examples explaining personal situations from everybody. How do you/does one know and decipher that it’s Archangel Michael assisting them and not someone else?

DOREEN: Well I mean there’s probably no definitive way until we get more technology- which I have been told, from the angels, is coming; where we’ll be able to do what’s the equivalent of kind of an X-ray of energy so you can see who you’re talking to.

But right now we can only go with what I described in the book and that’s the tell-tale characteristics of a Michael experience: a feeling of great warmth, great strength. He’s very to-the-point- just the essence of strong energy. And a lot of the other angels just don’t have that raw strength that he has. So even when working with Jesus or one of the other Ascended Masters you just don’t get that ‘oomph’ feeling like you do with Michael because he truly is a warrior of peace and so you get that peaceful, intense warrior feeling with him. And most people I talk to say that they break out into like a perspiration, like being in the full noon sun; real hot.

MICHAEL: I wonder with all the different archangels that are available to us and even for people that aren’t aware of the angels necessarily why do you think that Archangel Michael is the most popular or familiar to everyone?

DOREEN: That is a really good question. Just off the cuff- because Raphael to me is also very familiar and close to a lot of us- but Michael, I do think the Catholic church really promoted him quite well. So whatever feelings anyone has about the church, they have created a big awareness of him and there are churches dedicated to him everywhere. I do believe also that many people have had personal experiences with him and one of the hopes I have with this book is that it will get us all openly admitting it and talking about it- especially those who might be outside of traditional religion and say ‘you know this is what happened to me’. I think I have been working with Michael since I was a little girl and I can only deduce that I like a lot of us lightworkers knew him between lives or past lives and then created kind of a contract with him that we would come in and work real closely with him.

MICHAEL: I noticed in the book that there’s always the request that you ask Michael to help you. Does Archangel Michael help people without the request being made?

DOREEN: I love that question. There are a number of stories that I receive weekly- and you have to imagine that my office between just my office Angel Therapy and then I work for Woman’s World magazine where I write a weekly angel column which in itself is a whole other story to write a mainstream magazine weekly and angel channelling column. We get thousands of stories a week and I get the privilege of reading many of them and so there’s a number of stories of people getting intervention without specifically asking or praying and the only pattern I can find in that is that the angels will intervene without permission if your life is going to be taken- if you’re going to die before it’s your time to go. And that happened to me in my 1995 carjacking and I do believe it was Michael who saved me. I had prayed for protection but I hadn’t prayed for the warning that I got ahead of time. What happened of course just to review: I was getting ready to go to a spiritual place in Anaheim and I heard a voice that I believe was Michael tell me that I’d better put the top up on my convertible car or it would be stolen and he repeated the warning three times. You see I hadn’t asked for help and yet he was offering help. And the carjacking when it occurred an hour later, the two men had weapons, so I believe that they saved my life because it wasn’t my time to go. But I think that if you’re going to have an experience where it’s not life endangering, you have to ask, I think then it’s free will. And it’s very fine point at that level which I don’t claim to fully understand but what I asked Archangel Raphael once and he had a beautiful explanation that’s in Messages from your Angels -is that about free will vs God’s will- is that it’s all the same ultimately because your higher self’s will is the same as God’s will and it’s the ego will that we sometimes define as free will but that’s not technically free will that’s ‘fear will’.

MICHAEL: How do you know if its guidance from your angels or guidance from your imagination?

DOREEN: The lower self of course is in lack mentality so it feels like it has to kind of sneak around or compete to get its needs met where the higher self knows absolute abundance so there’s no fear involved, not in such a rush, and its a lot more relaxed feeling to it.

Even in an emergency- I mean when I was getting the warning and all these people I’ve talked to were getting warnings, the angels don’t promote fear even in a life-threatening situation they just simply give you very blunt instructions of what to do to get out of it, for example ‘Change lanes right now’.

MICHAEL: What would you say in your opinion would be the most profound message given to the world by Michael?

DOREEN: To me Michael is about that fear is a choice and that we don’t have to succumb to feeling the fear of the future, the fear about the world, the fear about our personal lives. For years I’ve been working with people to kind of combat what I call the ‘bag lady syndrome’ (and there’s also a counterpart ‘bag man syndrome’) where what it is people are afraid that they’re going to be destitute in the future and they’re imagining themselves kind of begging and living impoverished lives and it’s really disempowering. Michael is here to help us all to rise above that and then experience above that. There’s no need for fear. I love working with him because I truly find that by being in that space of feeling peaceful and protected then you attract that experience and it really goes back to the most important book I ever read which is Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl in which Viktor talked about his experience in Auschwitz which of course was horrifying and he lost everything but what he found in that experience was that the one thing no one could take away from him was his right to be happy. And he found ways of being happy- in probably the most hellish experience that has happened in recent history- through his choices. And to me that’s what Michael is all about- that no matter what’s going on around us we truly can feel safe, protected and peaceful. And by feeling that we heal our lives in many, many ways and I think we also then lift up those around us. Michael also can protect our loved ones and I think it’s very important for all of us who feel the kinship with Michael’s energy to be asking him to be with our loved ones. He of course won’t interfere with anyone’s free will but his presence is like having a moat around that child or whoever you are praying for.

MICHAEL: A lot of Michael and Archangel Michael has come from the Christian and the Catholic religion. Now what I hear from different people of different religions is that they feel that Archangel Michael does not have free will. We have free will- but he needs to report to God or a higher power before he can be sent.

DOREEN: That’s true. Yes, that’s because he’s ego-less. All the angels are ego-less. So his will would be exactly God’s will. That’s true. He doesn’t have an independent ego personality- he’s a complete reflection of the divine wisdom and the divine love- which to me, so are we in truth. Our higher selves are also ego-less.

MICHAEL: So is the difference there that we have free will and he doesn’t?

DOREEN: It’s free will in the illusion of separation on Earth. It’s free will in the dream. It’s like we have the right to dream whatever we want- it’s like that. That’s where we get into the real esoterics, isn’t it?!

MICHAEL: I noticed in the book that a lot of times you made reference to people who would invite Michael to live in their home- I think one person actually made an invitation and put it in her son’s room or hung pictures of Michael in the home. How important is this to attracting him into our lives?

DOREEN: Michael does not require anything beyond a real simple invitation. What the pictures of Michael do is it’s more for us to remind us to ask him. And even then we all know that if we have a picture hanging up in the same place after a while it becomes invisible so I would mix them up, I would change the location of them. All he needs is us to think it, say it, scream it, write it- just think his name and he’s there ‘boom!’

MICHAEL: So we don’t even have to do it verbally?

DOREEN: No- gosh no. Just thinking it works. Or picturing him even.

MICHAEL: There’s lots of books coming out now about 2012 and there’s a lot of fear in some of those about pole shifts and increased contrast on Earth. I wondered what Archangel Michael had to say about this and what his role in ushering in the new energies. I mean is he involved with that and does he work with Jesus in that. So kind of two questions involving Jesus’ connection and the New Age coming in.

DOREEN: A lot of people say that Michael and Jesus are the same being. I actually see them as two different energies because when I’m working with people I can see Jesus and then I can see Michael as two separate personalities but they work really closely together. Jesus’ energy is somewhat intense but nothing like Michael’s. Working with Michael is like working with the direct noon sunshine and he’s just on fire and he gets the job done and its one hundred percent positive and he’s absolutely involved in the shift that’s going on. From everything that they’ve told me- and I get information while I’m sleeping, while I’m meditating and I’m a divemaster- a scuba dive master in the ocean- about six hours a week I’m underwater and I get real clear connections under there and I keep checking in and everything they show me is change can feel threatening to people, change can feel like you’re losing things that are valuable to you but that this is a necessary and positive change we’re going through and it involves letting go of the old which can be discombobulating- letting go of the old guard of the fear-mongering politics, the old way of schooling children, the old legal systems. All those old systems just are not keeping up with the new way that humans are operating. And so as we let go of the old- we could just acknowledge that these are all dinosaur systems and harmoniously and smoothly transition into new ways. I think that a lot of people- mainstream people- aren’t acknowledging that these old systems aren’t working so it’s more going to be that they just fall and are replaced with something new and during that interim time there’s going to be some reorganisation and confusion and people will think it’s the equivalent of Armageddon and such but it really isn’t it’s just ‘out with the old and in with the new’ and Michael is here to oversee that, to keep us peaceful, to protect us, to ensure our basic needs of food and shelter etc are met and we just have to be working with him really closely, be really honest with him- everything basic like ‘Michael, I’m afraid I don’t have enough money for this bill’. Tell him all your needs: ‘Michael I feel like I need this and I need this’. Whatever it is that you need to be peaceful he’s there for you and he doesn’t distinguish whether it’s a so-called trivial question or request or a big request- to him anything that has to do with peace is equally important.

MICHAEL: I wonder if you’ve brought this information to people in Catholic or Christian churches- to the clergy or any people in positions of power in the churches and what has the response been?

DOREEN: It’s mixed. I’ve been really pleased but when I first started this work I asked for protection from the angels in order for me to agree to do this work and so they’ve been really wonderful at protecting me against- or away from zealots. I have a programme called Angel Therapy Practitioner programme where people who practice Angel therapy and there’s at least two Catholic priests who are doing it undercover. So it’s more at the priest level and a few nuns have gone through my programme. From the love-based Christians and the love-based Catholics- they love my work! The one’s who are more focused on the fear and the guilt aspects- who in my opinion misunderstand Jesus’ message- they tend to be afraid of anything- they’re afraid of their own shadows, right?- and so they get a little afraid of talking to anyone but God. Actually one woman came to my workshop and she was raised Catholic and she told me that she never knew she could talk to Jesus directly- which I thought was disturbing. And so I had her talk to Jesus directly and she had a wonderful connection. To me, you have your own experience and then you make up your own mind about your faith and what you’ve been taught, right? So I’m hoping that with all my workshops and with this book in particular that people will have a Michael experience and then make up their own mind and if they’ve been taught other than that then it may cause some confusion for them.

MICHAEL: Because the stories of Michael and the information that we have about Michael does come from the Catholic and Christian church and I didn’t know if they are open to this type of information as well or do they just see Michael as a story?

DOREEN: Oh, I think they see him as very real, the number of Catholics that I’ve interacted with. My sample may be skewed, my sample may be Catholics who read Hay House books so that might be not the most scientifically valid study but the Catholics that I’ve met who are practicing Catholics they call Michael every day and they have prayers of Michael they use. The Christians- the non-Catholic Christians- tend to see Michael as someone who was valid two thousand years ago, you know that he was real at the time of Jesus and he was there when the Bible was written but not now. And that’s part of my message is that he and the other angels of the Bible are still very much alive and well and with us and want to work with us now.

MICHAEL: Do you feel then that some of this misunderstanding may have to do with misinterpretation of the sword or the symbol of the sword?

DOREEN: Could be. I mean a lot of the little cards that they pass out in the Catholic domains show Michael stabbing this very frightening beast that’s supposed to be the devil and it’s symbolic, isn’t it, of him conquering fear or the ego. But if you believe in a literal devil then you necessarily feel afraid of the literal devil being here and now and there’s some people who have this belief that an angel could trick you and it’s really the devil. And some of it’s from John Milton’s Paradise Lost which I have to again and again tell people ‘that’s not the Bible- that’s a novel’ I think that the best thing we can all do is just to be happy and peaceful and through the Law of Attraction other people will say ‘what are you doing to be so happy and peaceful?’ and then we could tell them. And so I think that promoting peace and happiness through example is the most important thing. And so when someone comes to me and they’re afraid I try not to get too much in a sparring match with them; I can ‘Bible thump’ with them because I’ve read the Bible many times- but I don’t think it does anything because no one’s going to change anyone’s mind- but experience will.
